BIO

Izaak Mills is a New York-based woodwind player, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and recording artist, originally from Olympia, WA.

He was mentored at a young age by virtuoso saxophone/clarinet player and pioneer of multi-phonics, Bert Wilson.  He went on to study jazz performance at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, where he was greatly touched by the music and instruction of Hadley Caliman, Paul Taub, David Peck, Jim Knapp, Chuck Deardorf, Hermeto Pascoal sideman Jovino Santos Neto, and Julian Priester, known for his work with Sun Ra’s Arkestra.  Izaak was heavily influenced by his lessons in “free ensemble”, playing with Denny Goodhew at this time. for several years IZAAK was part of the Monktail Creative Music Concern, a group dedicated to improvisation.  From this came the groups Reptet, Floss, and Non Grata, on whose recordings one can hear Izaak’s vast range as a jazz composer and multi-instrumentalist.

Izaak has toured extensively throughout the world as an invaluable sideman, best known for his work with Clinton Fearon, 79.5, Midnight Magic, and Jackson and the Janks, to name just a few. He has shared stages with Durand Jones and the Indications, Aaron Frazer, Chicano Batman, Bunny Wailer, The Viceroys, Scientist, Israel Vibration, Eek A Mouse, ESG, The Wailers, Wailing Souls, michael rose of black uhuru, fishbone,  and dionne warwick.

Izaak is an accomplished session musician and recording artist whose deep, soulful, and deliberate sound can be heard on more than 70 recordings. His composed music and performances have also been featured in recent film and television projects. He performed flute and saxophone on the score for Marty Supreme (2025), written by daniel lopatin, and can be heard on alto flute in Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, Season 1, Episode 7, “The Viewing” (2022). His composition “BDFQ” was featured in The Righteous Gemstones, Season 4, Episode 2, “You Hurled Me into the Very Heart of the Seas.”

Izaak maintains a distinct and individual voice regardless of the ensemble or style he is working within. While his own projects span a wide range of styles, shaped by eclectic influences, they remain grounded in a singular musical identity. As a collaborator, he is highly valued for his versatility, sensitivity, and ability to adapt. Through his work with Clinton Fearon, Izaak developed a deep appreciation for reggae, which he seamlessly blends with his jazz foundation in projects such as Dutchi Masters and Super Nice Guys.
